In McDowell County, WV, the distressing reality is that clean, safe drinking water remains out of reach for the residents we serve. To those unfamiliar with this region, it may seem inconceivable that within the United States, thousands of households lack access to consumable water.
However, Terra Vance recently stepped in, providing a lifeline in the form of bottled water for our pantry—a direct benefit to our local residents who face water scarcity. As Rock Springs Ministries, Inc., along with the entire community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to her for recognizing this hardship and actively expressing her concerns through tangible action.
The purpose of this post is to share her narrative from multiple sources and to bring attention to this heart-wrenching truth. One must experience or witness it firsthand to fully understand what many take for granted: the stark reality of living day-to-day without clean or accessible water.

She founded NeuroClastic, Inc., a nonprofit organization led by a collective of Autistic individuals dedicated to addressing the evolving needs and advocating for the future of the Autistic community. Her passions are in the intersections of social justice, equity, literature, truth, and science.
The provided pictures above will illuminate the issue I’m discussing. These images were captured in various homes of acquaintances. Some residents stay ill, believing their water is to blame. My hair color has altered due to using this water. Others, have experienced hair loss, purple spots on their body, and rashes (as shown in the news story below).
Terra has been immensely helpful in supplying clean water. In the last month, we distributed bottled water to 127 individuals. So, we extend a heartfelt thank you for the water.

The image and video next depict the source most households depend on for their water supply. This water underwent testing by VA Tech and was benchmarked against multiple homes’ water. The mountain’s water proved to be purer, but still contaminated.
NBCNews.com reported on the residents of McDowell County, West Virginia, including Burlyn Cooper, who depend on contaminated mountain runoff for their water supply for drinking water due to polluted wells, often linked to nearby natural gas extractions. The county, once thriving from coal mining, now faces economic decline, aging infrastructure, and a dwindling population, making it difficult to secure safe water. Despite efforts by the local Public Service District and nonprofits like DigDeep, many residents still lack access to clean water, highlighting a broader national issue of water access gaps in low-income, rural communities.
While I don’t know a long-term solution, I can address the immediate need by continuing to hand out water. Additionally, we can reach out to individuals, churches, and organizations for support and even explore the possibility of setting up water stations in strategic locations to make sure that everyone has access to clean drinking water.
