Being Doers of the Word: A Call to Action for Christians

Guest Post By: Eddie Bouknight

James 1:22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

As a believer on the Lord Jesus, we should be growing in grace as we mature in faith. As we walk in spirit and truth, we should produce good works that God has prepared specifically for each one of us. Christians are to be quick to hear because, “faith comes by hearing and hearing comes from the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Merely sitting in church listening to a sermon is not all that is involved in being an obedient follower of Christ. What you do with what you have heard is very important. When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and decide to be His disciple, then you must act on what you have learned about His love, His will, and His ways. Show His love in what you do and say. Outward expressions of your faith comes from an inward change in your heart. If you do not, or cannot, show His love, you may be deceiving yourself as to your acceptance of Him as Your Lord and Savior. Scripture backs this up: John 13:35 (HCSB)” By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Show His love by being doers of His word.

Father, thank You for another day. Thank You for teaching us the importance of being a Christian who produces righteous fruit. This is not only by faithfully attending church but also by what we say and do. Lord, please keep us from worldly ways. Give us strength to not slip back into the desires of the flesh. May we grow in grace as we continue to grow in knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In His powerful and precious name we pray. Amen.
