Luke 6:27-28 “But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Our enemies are those who directly, knowingly, and purposefully try to harm or even destroy us. They have bitterness and hate in their hearts against us. They continuously plot evil against us. It is these very same people that Jesus says we are to love! This is contrary to what our human desire is. It just does not feel right or normal to the natural person.
Loving our enemies does not mean we agree with them, support them, or even become friends with them. It means when they hate us, we love them in return. Jesus is the perfect example of this type of love. The Roman soldiers who beat, tortured, spit on, and nailed His hands and feet to the cross, Jesus loved them. He loved them so much that He asked His Father to forgive them! He is telling us to love others as He loves us. It is not an easy task, but it is a necessary task. Why? This I know because the Bible tells me so!
Father, You loved the world so much that You sent Your One and only Son who lived a sinless life, was be betrayed, suffered, and died a gruesome death so humanity could have the only way to everlasting life with You. Jesus, while we were still sinners You died for us. Lord may our hearts grow to be more like the heart of Jesus, little by little, each day. LORD God, help us to love as Jesus loves. And it is in His powerful and precious name we pray. Amen!
